A funeral mass for Monday-deceased anti-communist activist and father of PM Mateusz Morawiecki began at noon on Saturday in the Polish Armed Forces' Field Cathedral in Warsaw. Attending the ceremony is President Andrzej Duda.

Also present at the mass are Sejm (lower house) and Senate Speakers Elżbieta Witek and Stanisław Karczewski, ruling Law and Justice (PiS) party leader Jarosław Kaczyński, Deputy Prime Ministers Jarosław Gowin and Piotr Gliński, Constitutional Tribunal head Julia Przyłębska, ministers, MPs and military officials.

Following the mass, Morawiecki will be laid to rest at Warsaw's Powązki Military Cemetery in a state ceremony also attended by the president.

Kornel Morawiecki was an anti-communist dissident since his student years and in 1982 founded the Fighting Solidarity union, a radical offshoot of the Solidarity Trade Union. In more recent years he ran in the 2010 presidential election and in 2015 became an MP for the Kukiz'15 movement. He was also a senior speaker of the Sejm and was ruling party Law and Justice's (PiS) candidate to the Senate (upper house) in the coming October 13 elections.

Kornel Morawiecki died on Monday aged 78 after a short battle with cancer.
