Kind-hearted single mum brings festive cheer to those in need with homemade cooking and a Santa
A hard-up single mum from Gdańsk is helping to spread some festive spirit by handing out 500 meals to those in need.
Patrycja Wydrzyńska, who lives in the Nowy Port district of the city, first started making a few meals to give something back to her local community but that expanded quickly after news of her good deeds spread.
Wydrzyńska said: “More and more people come every time. We started modestly, with several dozen meals prepared from our own money.
“During the last action, together with our friends, we were supposed to cook 200 meals, in the end we manged to prepare 400 meals, which were claimed within a few hours.
“My heart rejoices when I know that we can help.”
Working in her compact kitchen with the help of her friends and children, she had to borrow pots from neighbours to meet the demand.
Currently she is living in communal housing and surviving on government handouts as her son is too young to be left at home alone.
As well as the generous food donations, Wydrzyńska established the ‘Heart to Heart’ group on Facebook that facilitates donations of clothes, toys and other unused items.
A survivor of four operations to treat cancer and a single mother to two children, she says she has emerged from her troubles stronger and now wants to help others who need assistance.
Wydrzyńska said: “People who were in need themselves will understand me best. This feeling, when there is nothing to put into the pot, is known to many inhabitants of our city.
“That is why I help, because I know how hard it is to live when there is no money, for example for food.”
