Peres Jepchirchir of Kenya won on Saturday the women's race of the World Athletics Half Marathon Championships in Poland's northern city of Gdynia, having clocked 1:05:16 and improving her own world record in a women-only race.

She led home Germany's Melat Yisak Kejeta, who smashed the European women-only record to take silver in 1:05:18, with Ethiopia's Yalemzerf Yehualaw a close third in 1:05:19.

The best Pole, Izabela Paszkiewicz placed 28th.

A men's race is to follow.

The championships were planned to take place on March 2020 but were moved to October due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

A mass race accompanying the championships has been called off. It was to be attended by over 27,000 runners.
