Indian ship recycling company to open European headquarters in Poland

The Indian company Baijnath Melaram specialising in ship recycling will open its European headquarters in Szczecin, north-western Poland, the company's representative and members of the West Pomeranian Indian Chamber of Commerce (ZIIG) announced on Friday.

The Indian company does not rule out expanding its operations in Poland.

"Both Szczecin and the whole region have great potential, especially in the maritime industry, which we are most interested in,"  Nitesh Agarwal, Baijnath Melaram's managing partner said. He noted that the company does not exclude that "along with the development of the business" it will also start to recycle ships in Poland and create a "significant number" of jobs.

"I am glad that Baijnath Melaram decided to run its European business from Szczecin," the chairman of the ZIIG Mariusz Luszczewski said. He added that the main goal of the chamber is to attract Indian capital to Szczecin and the region. "Initially, the company wanted to settle in Hamburg, but we managed to convince them to turn to Szczecin," Luszczewski pointed out.

Baijnath Melaram's Szczecin office is to be opened in the coming months. At the beginning it will employ about 10 highly qualified specialists.

The Baijnath Melaram company has been operating since 1956. It specialises in the recycling and scrapping of ships. Every year, specialists from the company dismantle 350 to 400 units. Baijnath Melaram has also carried out special orders for the Navy of the Republic of India, including recycling of two submarines and a destroyer.
