Inaugural sitting of Senate begins

President Andrzej Duda inaugurated the first sitting of the Senate's 10th term of office on Tuesday afternoon.

After the president's address, debates will be run by senior Speaker Barbara Borys-Damięcka of the Civic Coalition (KO).

An oath-taking ceremony will be followed by the election of a new upper house speaker.

The opposition, which has a majority in the upper chamber, has named Tomasz Grodzki of the Civic Coalition as a candidate for the post.

The ruling party Law and Justice (PiS) candidate is Stanisław Karczewski.
