Hero cop saves ‘crying dog’ after mistaking it for a baby in burning apartment block
A police officer from Silesia has been hailed a hero after leaping across a balcony into a burning apartment and saving a dog he initially thought was a baby.
Community cop Fabian Walotek had been on duty when he spotted smoke pouring from a 10th floor apartment block in Sosnowiec, southwest Poland.
Springing into action, the officer rushed inside where after hammering on the apartment’s front door and failing to get an answer he heard a faint ‘moaning’ sound.
Knocking on a neighbour’s door, quick-thinking Walotek dashed onto their balcony from where he spotted a baby’s cot in the smoke-filled apartment.
Sonia Kepper, press officer for Sosnowiec Police said: "He saw the balcony door was open and he heard something like moaning or whining.
“When he noticed a baby crib in the room, he decided to jump through the railing onto the other balcony and went inside the burning flat."
Entering the flat, Walotek found that the ‘baby’ was in fact a terrified dog suffocating in the smoke.
Scooping it up in his arms, the policeman made his way back over the balcony to the safety of the neighbours’ apartment, while a few minutes later, the fire brigade arrived and managed to successfully extinguish the fire in the burning flat.
Following the daring rescue, Walotek took the lucky dog, who was unharmed, down to the safety of his police car to await the return of its owners.
Kepper added: “The joyful dog seemed to perfectly understand what had happened and was very grateful for the help it received.
“It also felt quite safe and at ease when waiting for its owners in a police car.”
After posting about the rescue of the “sweet dog” on its social media page, the Silesian police force was inundated with praise for Walotek’s actions with many writing ‘Bravo’ and ‘Respect’, and one writing ‘You restore my faith in people! Thank you.”
