Poland jetted off to Sochi for the start of the World Cup in jubilant mood today after thrashing Lithuania 4-0 in last night’s friendly in Warsaw.

They were seen off at the airport by over 200 high-spirited fans belting out the Polish football anthem.

To add to the sense of europhia, two hours before the game it was confirmed that centre-back Kamil Glik had been given the all clear to join the squad following uncertainty over his health following an injury during training in Arłamów.

But despite the party atmosphere, Lewy and the squad won’t be treating last night’s win as a guarantee of success in Russia.  Lithuania didn’t qualify for the Cup and the match was more of an experiment in different formations and tactics. The players had a chance to get used to the VAR technology (video assistant referee), which might rule out referee mistakes. Still, the two goals by Robert Lewandowski, plus one by each Jakub Błaszczykowski and Dawid Kownacki are reasons to be optimistic.

Coach Adam Nawałka said: “We are content, but without euphoria. We are glad because of the progress made since the match with Chile on Friday (2:2 – TFN), especially apparent in the physical preparation. In Poznań, after the tough training camp in Arłamów the players were not in the optimal disposition. It was much better this time, but there is still work focused on pre-game preparations to be done and a few elements that need to be corrected”.

Team captain, Robert Lewandowski, who scored his 54th and 55th goal for the National Team was also cautious: “Lithuania didn’t oppose us too strongly (…).Sometimes it’s harder to score during training. But for sure this game was useful, for example when it comes to positioning ourselves without the ball.

“Certainly, our confidence rises after a game like this. However, the stress and adrenaline will be completely different at the World Cup. We would like to keep this confidence, simply not be afraid”, he added.

The Polish side will start their World Cup battles as one of the last teams, plaColombia (June 24th, Kazan) and Japan (June 28th, Volgograying Senegal on June 19th in Moscow. The other rivals in group H are d).
