All people arriving in Poland, especially those from the UK, can have a free Covid test owing to the mutation of the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

In order to get the test, travellers must contact a special information line, the Chief Sanitary Inspector (GIS) said.

"In connection with the observed mutation of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, all people travelling to Poland, especially from Great Britain, can have a free test," GIS announced on its website. "Please contact the sanitary inspectorate's infoline (+48 22 25 00 115). Consultants will direct all those interested to the proper Regional Sanitary-Epidemiological Station, which will issue a test order at drive-through points."

Government spokesman Piotr Mueller tweeted on Sunday night that, for safety reasons, flights from the UK to Poland would be suspended from midnight on Monday. "The decision is connected with the appearance of a new variant of coronavirus," he wrote.

In an earlier talk with PAP, Mueller said that the new strain in the UK would be among the topics discussed by the Government Crisis Management Team on Monday.

The World Health Organisation said that in addition to the UK, nine cases of the new strain have been detected in Denmark, with one case each in the Netherlands and Australia.
