The value of support for the culture sector in Poland amid the coronavirus epidemic may reach even PLN 4 billion (EUR 882.2 mln), almost as much as the culture ministry's annual budget, Culture Minister Piotr Gliński told the Gazeta Polska daily on Wednesday.

Gliński said that the situation Poland is facing due to the epidemic, is "unprecedented" and that extraordinary measures have to be implemented to counteract the spread of the virus.

He added that the culture sector was one of the first to be affected by restrictions implemented by the government and will probably need much more time to return to its pre-epidemic state.

Gliński also said that in the long run, when the epidemic threat has ceased, his ministry plans to implement a subsidy programme, just for cultural institutions, so that they can return to their activities.

"We are also working on estimating the losses of cultural institutions so that, when we amend the budget, which will most likely be necessary, we can increase the subsidies for institutions run and co-run by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage," the minister said.
