Film about Polish WWII pilots premieres in London
The film "Hurricane," about Polish pilots who fought in the skies above England during the Battle of Britain, directed by David Blair, premiered at the Vue Cinema in Leicester Square, central London, on Tuesday.
"This is a universal story that everyone should know," said the actors.
The British-Polish superproduction "Hurricane" (shown in Poland as "303: Battle of Britain") tells the story about pilots from the legendary Polish 303 Squadron during one of the most significant battles of World War II – The Battle of Britain.
Speaking with the Polish media during Tuesday's premiere, Blair explained that it was only when he was working on the film that he realized the significance of the Polish contribution to World War II and pointed out that he was hoping that such a message would reach viewers around the world.
Blair said that although he knew something about World War II and the Battle of Britain, also about the fact that the Poles played a part, he never knew how important their role was. The director said he was embarrassed to say that he did not know that and was never taught about it. He felt that by responding to it in some way, the error was being fixed and Poles were being given justice.
Ivan Rheon, an actor in the film, spoke in a similar tone saying that he "had no idea" about the role of Poles, but their story touched him personally and he wanted to tell it very much.
The actor, who also speaks Polish in the film, admitted that he had problems learning the new language. At the beginning he did not realize how hard it could be. He knew, however, that it would give the story a sense of authenticity, and it would be to the detriment of the film if only English was used.
Rheon emphasised that, in his opinion, the premiere of the film at the moment when Great Britain is preparing to leave the European Union gives it an additional political overtone.
The film "303: Battle of Britain" hit theatres in Poland on August 17. A few weeks later, a film on the same subject premiered - "Dywizjon 303. Historia prawdziwa" (Squadron 303. The True Story) - with Piotr Adamczyk and Maciej Zakościelny in the main roles. This film was based on a book by Arkady Fiedler.
