EU's Mogherini thanks Poland for staging Middle East conference - FM

Federica Mogherini, High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, has thanked Poland for the organisation of a conference devoted to peace in the Middle East held in Warsaw last week, Polish FM Jacek Czaputowicz said in Brussels.

Czaputowicz said that he briefed Mogherini on the course of the Warsaw event during the Munich Security Conference last Friday. "She thanked for the organisation of the summit, for Poland's constructive approach towards the staging of the conference (...). Today (in Brussels - PAP) I also presented information on the course of the summit, its historic importance and the fact of bringing together representatives of Israel and Arab countries," the minister said.

He added that in this context he stressed the need for maintaining transatlantic relations as regards issues in the Middle East.

"Of course there are certain differences as far as interpretations are concerned or steps aimed at bringing peace and stability in the Middle East. This especially concerns the nuclear agreement with Iran. The EU, including Poland, thinks that it contributes to stability. However, we know perfectly from statements made by US administration representatives during the conferences in Warsaw and Munich that the US have withdrawn from this and are in favour of increasing pressure by imposing sanctions," Minister Czaputowicz said.

However, he added that this significant difference does not exclude further discussion on this issue.

On Monday, Minister Jacek Czaputowicz was in Brussels to attend a Foreign Affairs Council meeting.
