EU's agriculture needs strategy, Polish commissioner nominee tells EP
Poland's candidate for the EU agriculture commissioner, Janusz Wojciechowski, said at his hearing at the European Parliament on Tuesday that the European Union needs a long-term strategy for agriculture.
Wojciechowski said the EU had a long-term vision for the climate, but lacked a similar one for agriculture.
The candidate observed that the number of farmers in the EU has been going down year after year and argued the trend should be stopped.
Wojciechowski called the EU's Common Agricultural Policy a success story, but said it still has its weaknesses that call for a reform. He also stressed agriculture's role in protecting the climate, environment and biodiversity.
However, the EP's agricultural committee decided after the hearing that the Polish candidate will have to answer some more questions in writing, and the committee will get back to deciding whether to give the green light to Wojciechowski next Tuesday, PAP learned unofficially.
