European Wrestling Championships – Roksana Zasina wins silver

Roksana Zaspina (ZTA Zgierz) won the silver medal in the 55 kg freestyle category during the European Wrestling Championships, held in Kaspiisk, Russia. She lost to the Belarusian Iryna Kurochkina in the gold-medal match, which ended in a 4:4 draw.

This is the first medal earned by the Polish team during this year’s Championships, but the third European Championships medal won by Zaspina. She had previously won gold in 2013 in Tbilisi, and bronze two years ago in Riga.

During the second minute of the gold-medal match the Belarusian wrestler, Iryna Kurochkina, received a warning and failed to use her 30-seconds period of activity, letting the Pole score a point. Zasina allowed herself to be surprised two minutes before the end, permitting her rival to push her to the ground and off the mat and score a total of four points. The 29 year old Zasinadidn’t surrender and gained 3 more points, leading to the 4:4 draw. However, because the Belarusian scored higher (two points times two), it was she who finally won match.

The Polish wrestler from Zgierz suffered from a light rib injury, which prevented her from exhibiting the full spectrum of her abilities, stated Andrzej Supron, Chairman of the Polish Wrestling Association.

Zasina, the bronze medallist from last years’ World Championships in Paris, began the quarter-finals on Wednesday with a win by defeating Ukrainian Anna Voitova in 40 seconds, by the score of 10:0. In the semi-final she defeated Bediha Gun from Turkey, 2:1.
