EU passes conditionality mechanism by qualified majority, Poland against

The EU plan to make funds conditional on respecting rule of law was confirmed by a qualified majority of member states, the German spokesman for the EU presidency tweeted on Monday. Poland and Hungary were against, according to a PAP source close to the meeting.

"First decision was on the regulation on the protection of the Union budget (conditionality mechanism. EU Ambassadors confirmed the final compromise text with qualified majority.#EUBudget #MFF #RuleOfLaw," Sebastian Fischer's tweet read.

The ambassadors of Poland and Hungary reportedly said that all elements, the conditionality mechanism, the long-term budget and the recovery fund, constitute one package and should be adopted unanimously by the EU member states.
