Estonian president welcomed by President Duda
Polish President Andrzej Duda welcomed his Estonian counterpart Kersti Kaljulaidat at the Presidential Palace in Warsaw on Thursday. Both politicians are to hold talks and take part in a forum devoted to Polish-Estonian goals in the UN Security Council.
After the welcoming ceremony, the presidents will discuss bilateral cooperation, dialogue within the EU and NATO, and regional dialogue in the context of the upcoming fifth Summit of the Three Seas Initiative, which will be held in Tallinn, the capital of Estonia, in June 2020. After the discussion, the presidents will take part in the forum.
In 2017, Poland was elected as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council (UNSC) for the 2018-2019 term, which ends on December 31. As part of the meeting, President Duda will symbolically hand over the membership to Kaljulaid, as her country is an incoming member of the 2020-2021 UN Security Council.
On Friday, Krzysztof Szczerski, chief aide to Poland's head of state, met with UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres at UN headquarters in New York to discuss Poland's role in the UN Security Council ahead of the conclusion of its non-permanent membership.
He said that Poland's membership in the Security Council had been considered a success. "We were very active," Szczerski noted.
Poland sat on the United Nations Security Council as a non-permanent member five times (1946-1947, 1960, 1970-1971, 1982-1983, 1996-1997) and is currently ending its sixth term (2018-2019).
