Poland's presidential election must take place by August 6, the end of incumbent President Andrzej Duda's term, Sejm (lower house) Speaker Elzbieta Witek said on Tuesday.

Witek said that the August 6 date was a constitutionally anchored deadline for the election, and warned that if it failed to take place by then, Poland would be left without a head of state.

She also stated that the election, initially scheduled on May 10, had to be postponed without a new date being set after plans to hold them by postal voting, in view of the spreading coronavirus epidemic, failed owing to the Senate's (upper house) prolonged reading of the necessary legislation.

She added that she was concerned about the Senate's conduct in the matter.
