EC to call on Minsk to drop charges against Polish activists
The European Commission has told PAP it will call on the Belarusian authorities to drop charges against members of the Union of Poles in Belarus (ZPB) and to immediately and unconditionally release them.
The ZPB's president, Andzelika Borys, and two other senior union officials, Andrzej Poczobut and Irena Biernacka, were charged last week with "incitement to hatred" along with two other ZPB members.
A European Commission spokesperson told PAP on Wednesday that the body would renew an appeal by the EU's chief diplomat, Josep Borrell, made on March 25, for the Belarusian government to uphold its international obligations in the field of respecting human rights and fundamental freedoms.
The spokesperson continued to say the EC would call on the Belarusian government to withdraw charges against members of the ZPB and release them along with other political prisoners held in detention.
