The European Commission on Friday approved a broad Polish aid programme for enterprises affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.

The EUR 1.1 billion programme, which is designed to support a number of business sectors including retail, tourism and entertainment, was passed by the Commission as temporary state aid.

Margrethe Vestager, the commission's vice president, said the programme will enable pandemic-damaged companies to remain financially solvent and to continue operating. Vestager added that the Commission was working together with member states to create support mechanisms for the EU economy.

The Polish scheme will provide companies, regardless of size, with staff wage subsidies and direct financial grants. It can also suspend social security payments for companies which have experienced a drop in business of at least 40 percent.
