The Polish government will spend PLN 11.5 billion (EUR 2.41 billion) this year to subsidise coal purchases for homes with coal-fired stoves.

Coal prices on global markets soared when the world's economies started to emerge from the slowdown caused by the coronavirus pandemic and spiked when Russia invaded Ukraine in late February 2022.

To help out Polish households who rely on coal for heating, the Polish government decided on Tuesday to offer one-off subsidy of PLN 3,000 (EUR 630) to each home with a coal-fired stove registered as the primary source of heating.
