Charity art auction for refugees to be held in Warsaw
A fund-raising event titled Refugees Welcome Charity Art Auction 2020 will be held on September 13, the Museum of Modern Art and the Ocalenie (Salvation) Foundation in Warsaw announced on Wednesday.
Aleksandra Kretkowska from the Ocalenie Foundation told PAP that the "Refugees Welcome Charity Art Auction will be held for the fourth time. Although the auction will take place in September, we want to draw attention to the important issue of helping refugees who are currently in a very difficult situation." She added that in the previous year it was possible to collect over PLN 200,000 (EUR 45,000), all proceeds were donated to support refugees and refugees living in Poland. The purpose of this year's auction is the same.
"The situation of refugees in Poland during the pandemic is particularly difficult. Many migrants have lost their jobs and livelihoods, because of the closing of borders they cannot leave, and they have no family here that could help in this difficult period. Everything is needed," said Kretkowska. She explained that prior to the pandemic the Foundation helped out with food aid to a dozen or so people every month, now more than 500 people have applied for assistance.
All proceeds from the auction will be donated to two programmes run by the Ocalenie Foundation - Refugees Welcome Polska, which connects refugees with Warsaw residents and residents of Warsaw who want to provide them with lodgings in their home, and the Help Centre for Foreigners.
Artists who have donated work for the charity auction include Paweł Althamer, Babi Badalov, Miriam Cahn, Rafał Dominik, Zuzanna Golińska, Robert Kuśmirowski, Olga Micińska, Karol Radziszewski, Joanna Rajkowska, Tadeusz Rolke, Maciej Sieńczyk, Agata Słowak, Marek Sobczyk, Radek Szlaga, Iza Tarasewicz and Artur Żmijewski. In all 44 Polish and foreign artists have donated work to the sale.
The auction will be held on September 13 at 5pm. It will be preceded by a pre-auction exhibition of works at the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw from 7 to 13 September.
Due to the epidemic situation, the auction will be conducted online. The main partner of the event is the Friends of the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw.
