Central bank: over 40 mln payment cards in Poland

The number of payment cards in Poland at the end of the second quarter of 2018 grew to 40.2 million, 685,000 more than at the end of the first quarter, the National Bank of Poland (NBP) reported on Monday.

NBP said that debit cards totalled 31.7 million at the end of Q2, 2018, 656,000 more than after the first quarter of the year.

The number of credit cards reached 5.9 million at the end of June 2018, 611 (or 0.01 percent) more than at the end of March 2018.

The percentage of debit cards amounted to 78.8 percent, while credit cards were 14.6 percent of the total.

In addition, NBP noted that the number of proximity cards continues to rise this year, by 996,000 in Q2, totalling 32.9 million at the end of that period.

Proximity cards are also extending their share of the Polish market, accounting for 81.7 percent at the end of Q2, 2018, up from 80.6 percent after the first quarter of that year.
