CD Projekt Red teams up with Japanese studio for incredible new anime series on Netflix
Polish video game company CD Projekt Red is to create an anime set in the world of its game Cyberpunk 2077.
Entitled “Cyberpunk: Edgerunners”, the series will be released in 2022 and will have ten episodes. The series will not recreate the Cyberpunk 2077 game but instead will be a stand-alone story with new characters – that of a street kid in Night City who becomes an “edgerunner” (an outlaw) to survive.
The anime will be created by Japanese animation studio Studio Trigger. Based in Tokyo, its works include several other TV series.
Cyberpunk 2077 game director and CD Projekt Red's studio head Adam Badowski said: “We are so excited to finally reveal that we are working on an anime in the Cyberpunk world.”
“We've devoured just about all the cyberpunk fiction there is to watch, read, and play; it's a genre that leaves so much room for creativity, and has had such a strong influence on us.
“Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is our love letter to cyberpunk as a whole, and to stories told in animated form.”
Studio Trigger’s CEO Masahiko Otsuka said: “I've always loved cyberpunk as a genre, but always found it difficult to create as an original work. This is why I'm very excited to be working with CD Projekt Red on this project.
“It won't be easy to please both game and anime fans, but I love a challenge, and I'm looking forward to the production. We'll do our best to meet and exceed expectations,” he noted.
The series’ release on Netflix means the it will be available to a wide international audience, as well as fans of the Cyberpunk 2077 game.
Founded in 1994 CD Projekt is the most successful Polish video game company, developing, publishing and distributing games.
