The northern Polish city of Bydgoszcz has been nominated in the European Best Destination 2020 competition, organised each year by European Best Destinations, a Brussels-based institution involved in the promotion of culture and tourism in Europe.

Bydgoszcz Deputy Mayor Michal Sztybel said the competition will promote Bydgoszcz in Europe and that its nomination, as the only Polish destination in the competition, is a chance to present the city's potential, giving as an example the river Brda, which "draws tourists like a magnet."

Justifying Bydgoszcz's nomination, Director of European Best Destinations Maximilien Lejeune said that the city is a perfect place for tourists willing to explore real places and experience something unique.

Apart from Bydgoszcz, nominations were given to Athens, Berlin, Cascais, Colmar, Cork, Heviz, Madrid, Minorca, Namur, Paris, Prague, Reykjavik, Rijeka, Rochefort, Rotterdam, Rome, Sibiu, Tbilisi and Vienna.

The results of the competition will be announced after online voting ends on February 5.

The contest has been organised since 2009. Last year, the title of European Best Destination was given to Budapest. In 2018, Wroclaw, western Poland, came first in the competition, while in 2017, the Polish coastal city of Gdansk was placed third.
