A patient in southern Poland has been diagnosed with the British strain of the coronavirus, PAP learnt on Thursday.

The variant was discovered at the GenXone laboratory in Zlotniki, western Poland, in a blood sample taken from the patient.

Believed to be very contagious, experts have attributed a sharp rise in the Covid-19 infection rate in the UK to the new variant.

“We have the genetic material but no information about the infected patient,” GenXone told PAP.

GenXone specialises in sequencing the coronavirus to monitor its mutations.
