Blind footballers from Wrocław are WORLD CHAMPS after spectacular performance at Blind Football Championships
Śląsk Wrocław Blind Football team has won the World Championship after beating Moldova’s Kishinev Fenix 3-0 in the finals.
Winning four of their matches and drawing only once, the team easily beat off completion to take the title held in Sozopol, Bulgaria.
Blind football is a variation of the regular game similar to futsal. Each team has five players, all of them apart from the goalkeeper blindfolded, regardless of the level of their sight impairment. The ball is designed to make jingling or rattling sounds, so that the players can orient themselves.
Players have to signal when they are going for the ball or to announce their position, by saying ‘go’ or something similar. Guides from outside the field provide additional instructions to both sides.
For Śląsk Wrocław Blind Football, which was previously run by the SPRINT Student Sports Club for the Blind this year was groundbreaking.
Not only were they taken under the wing of one of the major Polish clubs, Śląsk Wrocław, they were also strengthened by Radosław Majdan, a goalkeeper and retired member of Poland’s national team.
The support showed the desired effect, and although the Polish team wasn’t a favourite to win, they showed their quality throughout the entire tournament.
Majdan commented on Facebook: “It was a few unforgettable days. You are a fantastic team and you deserved this success fully. Thank you very much for such a great and positive reception.
“With your ambition and commitment you can impress professional athletes. I am very happy that I could take part in this tournament.”
The former Pogoń Szczecin player was crucial to the final success, especially during the hardest game with Avangard Mitischi, when he didn’t let a single goal in.
The other two stars of the team where captain Robert Mkrtchyan, who was chosen as best player of the tournament and Łukasz Byczkowski, who scored an incredible six goals.
Mkrtchyan wrote on Facebook: “Radosław Majdan, our team's goalkeeper, literally saved our dreams! Thanks to the great performance of the whole team I was able to receive the prize for the best player of the World Club Championship!
“To the University of Wrocław, Institute of Education I’m sending an excuse for absence in class in this form,” added the team’s captain, who is also a student, under a photo of himself with Club Championship trophy.
