A forester suffered serious injuries after he was attacked by a bear in the Bieszczady Mountains in south-east Poland, a local forestry service has reported.

"While inspecting a fir plantation the forester was approached by a small bear and seconds later he was attacked by a large female, probably the mother," said Edward Marszałek from the Regional Directorate of the State Forests in Krosno.

The man sustained extensive head wounds, a torn ear, an injury to the back and lost a lot of blood, he added.

Despite his injuries the victim managed to attract the attention of another forester who called the ambulance service. He also, along with other forest workers, provided first aid to the victim.

The man was transported by a helicopter to a hospital in Sanok, where his condition remains stable, according to doctors.
