Subunits of the Polish armed forces will support Border Guard activities, the head of the National Security Bureau (BBN), Paweł Soloch, told PAP on Saturday.

The decision was made by President Andrzej Duda in agreement with the Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki and after consultations with the ministers of internal affairs, administration and national defence.

Soloch told PAP that, as of midnight, a completely new situation will arise. "The temporary reintroduction of border controls, as well as restrictions on border traffic associated with the need to contain the coronavirus epidemic are a major logistical undertaking," he said.

He added that, as a result, it was necessary to involve several hundred Border Guards and they also needed help. "Therefore, after analysing the needs, the president and the government have decided to give additional support to the Border Guard. In accordance with the interior minister, such assistance will be provided primarily by subunits of the Territorial Defence Forces and, if necessary, logistic units, military engineers or military police," Soloch said.
