Polish-US negotiations regarding an agreement on defense cooperation, including an increase in the American contingent in Poland by a thousand soldiers, were close to finalisation, said US Secretary of the Army Ryan McCarthy on Wednesday.

On Tuesday, in Warsaw, McCarthy held talks with Defence Minister Mariusz Błaszczak concerning the implementation of an agreement concluded between Polish President Andrzej Duda and US President Donald Trump on increasing the US troop presence. On Wednesday, he visited US soldiers stationed in Poznań, western Poland.

McCarthy told PAP during a press briefing on Wednesday the talks were great and productive, and that the negotiations were nearing their end.

Initially, it was expected that the Defense Cooperation Agreement would be finalised during President Duda's visit to the White House this past June, but this did not happen. Instead, both leaders signed a declaration on the continuation of existing cooperation.
